La Madone de Fenestre, Mercantour, France
I visited La Madone de Fenestre at the end of winter and was able to drive directly to the front door of the refuge. There was still a lot of snow around and signs of the harsh winter that had preceeded were chillingly apparent. Trees lay flattened, strawn across the landscape, congregating in the valleys where avalanches had passed through. After a restless sleep I awoke early to explore the surrounding area. Navigating the deep snow, strong winds and steep slopes was hard without snow shoes. A short walk from the refuge I came across this lone tree. I was amazed to find animal tracks leading to the bottom of the tree and off into the distance, what luck!
