Wallace’s Hut, Falls Creek
Wallace’s Hut, Falls Creek in Victoria’s alpine region photographed early winter. The first snow had all but closed this area to the tourist traffic that frequents the iconic location. Thanks to the advice of others our early morning visit from Bright was not wasted. The gate had been closed but not locked so with a brief stop to open them our adventure continued on through the dark. Wallace’s Hut built by the Wallace brothers in 1889 is one of many huts in the rugged high country. It was built as a refuge for stockmen whilst the cattle sheltered from the harsh conditions under the snow gums. Now it mostly houses the occasional hiker or photographers looking to spend the night.

We photographed here on the first morning after our arrival from Sydney. We knew the days were limited before the access road would be closed for the season and decided to try again the following evening. Again the gate was closed but this time to our disappointment it was also padlocked. No amount of grovelling to the appropriate authorities back in Falls Creek ski resort would get us through. I guess I will have to return next winter and this time I’m going to cycle, who’s with me?
